You can't add slots, but swords and armour can have up to 3 slots (I think less for boots, pants and gloves). And glyphs are put into armor, while runes are put into swords, there's a difference. Glyphs are always active because they're put into your armor. Runes on the other hand are only showing effect when you use the sword with that rune on it.
